The most important thing to do, if you have not already, is to learn to swim. This applies to both adults and children. Children and toddlers should be supervised closely at all times if you are close to or in the water.Swimming should be done close to a manned lifeguard station or with someone else around. If you are at a beach, make sure to check surf conditions that there are no warnings posted and no warning flags are up. A red flag means no swimming. Yellow means caution. Blue means sea pests are in the waters. Swim in designated areas only. Do not swim around piers, pilings, and rocks, as this can be quite dangerous. Rely on your own abilities. If you feel you need a flotation device, you should not be in that type, depth, roughness, etc. of water. Do not swim during a strong wind, and never swim during an electrical or thunderstorm.
